The Return’s Top 10: No. 5 - Brown’s 209-Yard Performance at USM
12/9/2017 12:54:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Conference USA Freshman of the Year Spencer Brown had numerous breakout moments during his rookie campaign, but none were more impressive than his 209-yard performance at Southern Miss.
Entering the game needing 182 yards to break Jordan Howard's freshman rushing record, Brown did that and some against the Golden Eagles in leading UAB to a 30-12 victory.
The Birmingham native carried the ball a career-high 33 times for a career-high 209 yards. Most impressively, Brown got strong as the game went on and had 157 of his 209 yards in the second half.
It was Brown's first career 200+ yard rushing game and the seventh highest total in program history. It was fitting that the last player to rush for 200 yards on Southern Miss' home field was Jordan Howard in 2014 when he had a school record 262 yards in the final game of the season.
Brown would go on to compile 1,292 yards in the regular season which is the third highest total in program history. He enters the bowl game needing 97 yards to break the C-USA freshman rushing record of 1,388 yards held by Damion Fletcher of Southern Miss which was set back in 2006.
The 209-yard performance was one of six games in which Brown rushed for over 100 yards. Along with being named the C-USA Freshman of the Year, he was a Second Team All-Conference USA selection.
Brown and the Blazers (8-4) are less than two weeks away from playing in the 2017 Bahamas Bowl against the Ohio Bobcats (8-4). Tickets to the game are available by clicking here.
