BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB's cross country team will run against some of the best teams in the nation this weekend as the Blazers travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to participate in the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational.
The meet will be run Saturday at the site of the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championship, scheduled for Nov. 23.
The Blazers will send eight runners to compete in the Women's 6,000-Meter Blue Race in a 51-team field that includes 13 schools listed in the most recent USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) national rankings.
Florida State (No. 2), Georgetown (No. 5) and Oregon (No. 6) are all ranked in the top 10. Ten other teams are currently ranked and two more are among those receiving votes.
UAB will enter the following runners in Saturday's race that is set for 11:40 a.m. ET: Kirsty Addy, Kate Brown, Hannah Coffin, Rachel Harley, Elinor Kirk, Sarah Livett, Lindsay Miller and Lauren Scott.
"With 13 nationally ranked teams coming to preview the NCAA championship course, this is the best competition we will face all year," UAB cross country coach Tony Houchin said. "Several top C-USA opponents will also be in the race, so we should get a clear picture of where we stand heading into the conference championships. The girls are really motivated to redeem themselves of the previous race we had. I think we will see a greatly improved performance."
Saturday's meet will be the second in two weeks to the state of Indiana for the Blazers. UAB competed at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 4 but did not run as well as earlier this season when the Blazers finished first at both the Troy Invitational and the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala.
Kirk has been the Blazers' top individual finisher in all three meets this fall. The graduate student from Swansea, Wales finished 18th in the deep field at the Notre Dame meet after winning both the Troy Invite, as well as the meet in Mobile.
