BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB sophomore Rhiannon Johns was named the Conference USA Cross Country Athlete of the Week after running to a first-place finish at last weekend's Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Cross Country Memorial in Huntsville, Ala.

"Right now Rhiannon is running as well as she ever has," head cross country coach Blake Boldon said. "We're all very excited for her and she is training hard to continue improving her times. She has big things in mind for the end of the season."

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, native posted a personal-best 5K time of 18:22 last weekend to help UAB capture the title at the Earl Jacoby Memorial. The Blazers swept the top-six spots and earned a perfect score of 15 points.

UAB opened its 2009 slate at the Belmont Opener 4K on Sept. 4 in Nashville, Tenn. Johns led the team to a third-place finish out of a 12-team field. The sophomore standout finished in fifth place overall and first for the Blazers with a time of 14:37.01.

Johns and the UAB cross country team will return to the trails Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. The women's 6K race will begin at 12:55 p.m.
