BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- After opening the season two weeks ago with a stellar performance at the Trojan Invitational, the UAB cross country team will be back in action Saturday when the Blazers run in the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala.
Whereas the race at Troy covered a 3k, the women's meet this weekend will be contested over 6k. The women's race is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m. at the Mobile County Fairgrounds.
Eleven teams are slated to compete in Saturday's meet. Joining UAB will be host South Alabama, Alabama State, Millsaps, Mobile, New Orleans, Southeastern Louisiana, Troy, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette and William Carey.
"This weekend is going to have a slightly larger field and will also give us a look at how prepared we are for the 6k distance," UAB head cross country coach Anthony Houchin said.
"I expect us to tighten the pack a little better than we did at Troy. With so many newcomers though, I'm really pleased with how things are going in practice. We'll see if that transfers over to the competition."
The Blazers will have 12 competitors in Saturday's race: Elinor Kirk, Kirsty Addy, Kate Brown, Lauren Scott, Rachel Harley, Sarah Livett, Lindsay Miller, Hannah Coffin, Laurie Pray, Jenna Wesley and Kara Woods.
Kirk and Addy went one-two at the meet in Troy Aug. 30 as the Blazers finished 19 points ahead of runner-up Auburn. Brown (6th), Scott (10th), Harley (12th), Livett (13th) and Miller (19th) all finished in the top 20 among the individual finishers at Troy.
