Blake Boldon Added To UAB's Cross Country/Track & Field Staff

July 28, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Blake Boldon, who has prior experience in the Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conferences, has been hired as the head coach for UAB's cross country program and an assistant coach for track & field.

With his main concentration on the cross country team, Boldon will also work with the distance runners during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Boldon joins interim track and field head coach Kurt Thomas and assistant coach Althea Thomas to round out UAB's cross country and track & field staff. Kurt Thomas is set to begin his third season with the Blazers, including his first as interim head coach after veteran head coach Ray Stanfield retired following the 2009 season. Althea Thomas is in her second season with the program.

"Kurt and Althea are young, passionate and knowledgeable coaches," said Boldon. "I'm very fortunate to be a part of a staff with such great potential."

Before spending the past year as a personal running coach and an assistant track coach at Fountain Valley School of Colorado, Boldon was the assistant track coach and recruiting coordinator at Iowa State from 2005-08. During his time with the Cyclones, he oversaw various duties within the program, including focusing on the distance athletes and organizing team and high school camps.

Boldon spent the 2005 season as a volunteer assistant track & field coach at Florida State, where he also served as the recruiting coordinator for men's and women's middle-distance runners. Prior to that, he was a volunteer assistant coach with the Missouri State cross country and track & field teams from 2003-04.

"Coach Stanfield did a great job of building the UAB program," said Boldon. "I'm excited to help pick up where he left off."

"I think we can be very successful this year and am looking forward to the years ahead. We have the potential to compete very well on the conference, regional and national levels."

Boldon spent his collegiate career at Missouri State, earning the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Most Valuable Athlete and Indoor Most Outstanding Track Performer honors in 2003. He was a five-time MVC champion and holds the school records in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500 meters.

Also competing in the United States Track & Field Championships in recent years, Boldon has four top 10 finishes at the national event. His best finish came in 2007, placing fourth in the indoor 3000 meters.

"We can't be more fortunate than to have hired Blake to lead the proud tradition of cross country at UAB," said Kurt Thomas. "We wanted to make a statement in hiring someone who we knew would continue the great job that coach Stanfield had done and I believe we have done that with Blake.

"He has great competition experience from his professional career and great coaching experience. He brings outstanding enthusiasm that will immediately make this team better. I'm looking forward to seeing this team really take off this year."

Boldon received his bachelor's degree in mathematics education from Missouri State in 2003.
