TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ---- Two weeks ago, UAB's Elinor Kirk achieved one of her goals as she captured individual medalist honors at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships. On Friday at the NCAA South Regional meet, the graduate student from Swansea, Wales attained another one.
Kirk placed fifth at the regional meet at the Harry Pritchett Running Park, securing a spot in the NCAA Championships, coming up Nov. 23 at Terre Haute, Ind. Individually, the top four finishers not on a qualifying team (automatic or at-large) received invitations to the NCAA Championships.
Kirk crossed the finish line in the 6K race at 20:07.64, just seven seconds behind individual champion Colleen Quigley of Florida State. The field included 194 runners in the meet.
As a team, UAB placed 16th of 27 schools. Florida State won the women's race and placed a pair of runners in the top four.
Other UAB finishers were Sarah Livett (21:50.02), Rachel Harley (22:23.02), Lindsay Miller (22:46.85), Lauren Scott (23;03.00) and Laurie Pray (25:18.50).
