MOSELLE, Miss.--The UAB cross country team had three finishers in the top 20 in as the Blazers placed fourth at the 2012 Conference USA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Southern Miss at the Pine Belt National Golf Course.
"I am really pleased with how we performed today," head coach Tony Houchin said. "I said we'd have our best day of the year and we did just that. We had a significant improvement over last year's finish and that was a big goal of ours this year. So proud of this group of Blazer women who really came through for one another today."
With four finishers in the top 10, SMU took the team title with 38 points. Tulsa followed with 57 points in its second place finish, and East Carolina rounded out the top three with 123 total points.
The Blazers finished with a total of 149 points for a tie for fourth place with Rice.
Junior Elinor Kirk led the charge for the Blazers, finishing the 5K race with a time of 17:16.2 for sixth place. The mark, which earned her a spot in the All-C-USA first team, is nearly 16 seconds faster than Kirk's previous best time, set in September at the Lakefront Invitational. Kirk's performance also ranks as the fifth-fastest 5K time in UAB history.
Senior Sarah Hudak followed with a ninth place finish and a personal best time of 17:26.8. The race marks the fifth time this season that the Manchester, England native has beaten her previous best mark. The performance, good for the All-C-USA second team, ranks as the eighth-fastest 5K time in UAB history.
Also finishing in the top 20 and qualifying for a spot on the All-C-USA third team, junior Kate Brown crossed the finish line with a time of 17:49.3.
Up next, the Blazers will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to compete in the NCAA South Regional, hosted by Florida State, on Friday, Nov. 9
