Sarah Hudak captured the individual championship in the 3k race as the Blazer cross country team finished fourth overall Saturday at the Crimson Tide Cross Country Kickoff.
Hudak crossed the finish line with a time of 10:47.02, besting runner-up Stephanie Ledgerwood of Southern Miss by more than five seconds (10:52.04).
Alabama won the team title with 25 points while Southern Miss finished second with 52. The Crimson Tide placed runners in the third through eighth position to claim the meet crown. Samford was third with 82, ahead of UAB's total of 94.
"This was a great season opener," head cross country coach Tony Houchin said. "The goal was to put three in the top-25 and we did just that. Sarah executed a great race plan, running with the patience necessary to win."
UAB sophomore Kristie Leybourne finished in 15th place with a time of 11:44.09 in the field that had 41 competitors. Senior Rachel Harley was the Blazers' third finisher as she finished 26th with a time of 12:46.61. Making her debut with the UAB cross country team, senior Pascale Pinard finished the race in 13:25.16 and was 30th.
Jenna Wesley ran a time of 13:43.02 and finished in the 32nd position.
UAB cross country will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 7 at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
