BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB volleyball team recently announced the signing of Mandy Glon and Gabby Deshotel to National Letters of Intent to play for the Blazers in 2013.
Glon, a native of St. Charles, Mo., will be a right-side hitter for the Blazers and Deshotel, is a middle blocker from Daphne, Ala.
"We are really excited to welcome Gabby and Mandy to the Blazer family," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We look forward to seeing their development as student-athletes here at UAB."
Deshotel was a key contributor in Bayside Academy winning five consecutive Alabama State Championships. She garnered Mobile Press-Register Super 12 team honors four straight years from 2008-11, while earning state tournament MVP honors in both 2010 and 2012.
"Gabby is a tremendous athlete and should come in and contribute immediately," Messersmith said. "She comes from a very successful program and knows how to win. Her athleticism will make her a fun player to watch."
Deshotel finished her high school career with 2,405 kills, 1,054 blocks, 408 digs and 237 aces in five seasons.
Glon was a successful front row player at Francis Howell HS where she helped lead the team to three district championships and two sectional championships. In 2011, she was a second team all-conference selection and Francis Howell HS was ranked one of the top 50 programs in the nation.
"Mandy is big at the net and her strength across the front row will have a big impact for us," Messersmith said. "She is a left-handed attacker with a significant blocking presence.
