BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team will host Conference USA foe Tulane in its only match this weekend. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Nov. 1 in Bartow Arena.

UAB (17-9, 5-4 C-USA) is coming off of three-straight wins and will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s match. It will be the 33rd meeting between the Blazers and the Green Wave, with Tulane holding an 18-14 lead in the series. The teams met last season in an exciting match that went to five sets, but Tulane edged UAB 3-2 to take the win.

About the Blazers
The team is coming off of one of its most efficient offensive performances after hitting at a clip of .392 against Alabama State. UAB is hitting .254 on the season and is averaging 13.63 kills per set. The Blazers rank second in C-USA in service aces (1.38) and blocks per set (2.49).

Individually, sophomore Sam Skinner leads the team with 4.21 kills per set. Juniors Sara Rishell and Kiriana Hirini have been solid in the middle with .344 and .350 hitting percentages, respectively. Rishell leads the Blazers with 1.18 blocks per set and Hirini is averaging 1.13. Senior Rachel Fairbanks leads UAB’s defense and the conference with 4.99 digs per set.


 

 

Scouting the Green Wave
Tulane (20-2, 7-1 C-USA) is currently third in the conference and has dropped just one match in C-USA play this season. The Green Wave has not played since Oct. 25 when it defeated Florida Atlantic 3-0. The team is hitting a league-best .270 and is holding opponents to just .155. The Green Wave also leads the conference in assists (13.67) and kills (14.73) per set.

A trio of Tulane players are averaging over 3.00 kills per set, including Tea Juric (3.85), Cori Martone (3.43) and Annie Shurtz (3.20). Setter Mel Mandelbaum currently leads the league with 11.52 assists per set to run the offense. Grace Weaver leads the defense with 4.56 digs per set and Sarah Strasner is averaging 1.00 blocks per set.
