UAB (15-9, 4-4 C-USA) at Alabama A&M (4-16, 5-2 C-USA

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team (15-9, 4-4 C-USA) will be back on the road this weekend to face UTEP (12-7, 5-2 C-USA) and Alabama A&M (4-16, 3-1 SWAC).
The Blazers will travel to El Paso, Texas for a Conference USA tilt against the Miners on Friday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. CT, then return to Alabama to take on Alabama A&M Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. CT in Huntsville.
The match will be the 12th meeting between UAB and UTEP. The Blazers hold a 9-2 lead in the series. The two teams last met Nov. 16, 2012 in the C-USA tournament, where the Blazers came out with a 3-0 sweep. The Miners are currently fifth in C-USA standings. Xitlati Herrera leads UTEP with 4.28 kills per set and is hitting at a clip of .327.
The Blazers will face non-conference opponent Alabama A&M for the 11th time. UAB comes into this weekend’s match with a 9-1 lead in the series. In the last meeting, UAB defeated Alabama A&M 3-0 on Oct. 9, 2012. The Lady Bulldogs are led by Leslie Ekpe with 140 kills for an average of 2.06 per set.
Blazers Among the Ranks
UAB currently ranks in the top 50 nationally in hitting percentage (46th) on the season. The Blazers are collectively hitting at a clip of .250. Among Conference USA teams, UAB ranks second in blocks per set (2.55), and third in both hitting percentage and kills per set (13.68).
Individually, UAB has a player ranked in the top 50 nationally in four different categories. Becca Howard leads the conference in assists per set (11.53), which puts her ranked at No. 13 nationally. Rachel Fairbanks leads Conference USA in number of digs per set (5.02) and ranks 27th nationally. Sam Skinner ranks 26th in both kills per set (4.23) and points per set (4.77). She is second and third, respectively in conference rankings.
