It's good to be home after traveling up and down the east coast last weekend. We had an excellent weekend, which started off with a great win at Marshall. Marshall is an outstanding team, very well coached and all five games were played at a very high-level I thought.
Their crowd was outstanding. They were having 'Midnight Madness' for their basketball teams following the game so the place was pretty packed for the fifth game, which just added to the excitement and made for great TV as it was televised by CSTV.
We were down 13-12 in the fifth game and then Lilly Domingos took over. After she tied the game with a kill, she made just a monstrous block on Marshall's All-American, Kelly-Anne Billingy, to give us game point and then Lilly got another kill to finish off the match so it was great to see her step up in a pressure situation like that.
On Sunday, we beat East Carolina, 3-1. You always have concern about how your team will come out two days after an emotional win like we had at Marshall, but to the girls' credit, they came out and jumped on a talented East Carolina team from the start. We won the first two games, 30-22 and 30-23 before ECU came back to win the third game, but then we held off their comeback in the fourth game to win the match.
This weekend is a huge weekend for us being as though we are in a three-way tie for third place in the Conference USA standings. One of the teams we are tied with is Houston, who we will play Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
On Sunday we play Rice at 1:00 p.m. Rice is a talented young team that can beat anybody so we will have to come out and play very well in both matches this weekend.
Special congratulations to Nevena Stefanov who is this week's Conference USA Setter of the Week. It's the second time this season, actually in three weeks that she has won the award.
Until next time,
