BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB volleyball team will step outside of conference play on Tuesday to host Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. CT inside Bartow Arena.
The Blazers are coming off an impressive weekend, in which they defeated Memphis both on the road and at home to improve to 9-11 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA play.
Sam Serley was an enforcer at the net in the two victories, averaging 1.67 blocks per set, including an 11-block outing on Sunday vs. the Tigers. For the season, Serley is averaging 1.33 blocks per frame and has totaled a team-best 104 rejections for the Blazers.
Another Blazer that stepped up this weekend was setter Alison Woods. The senior averaged 10.22 assists per set and recorded double-doubles in each win vs. Memphis. She dished out a season-high 47 helpers on Friday and followed that up with a 45-assist effort in Sunday’s four-set victory.
As a team, UAB is averaging 2.33 blocks per set, having totaled 182 swats in 78 total sets. The Blazers have also showcased an improvement in serving, averaging 1.23 aces per set, with six players totaling 10-plus aces on the year.
Alabama A&M enters the midweek matchup with a 5-15 overall record and 3-0 in the Southwestern Conference. The Bulldogs have been hot as of late, winning their last four matches.
Clairissa Moore is one of the primary weapons for Alabama A&M, averaging 3.74 kills per set and has totaled 243 put-aways for the season. Moore is hitting .281, which ranks second on the team. Bianca Richardson tops the Bulldogs in attacking percentage, hitting at a .297 clip.
The matchup with the Blazers will mark the third Conference USA opponent the Bulldogs have faced in 2012. Alabama A&M fell to both Rice and Memphis in three sets earlier in the season.
After Tuesday’s match, UAB will host both Southern Miss on Friday (7 p.m.) and UCF on Sunday (Noon) to round out the week.
