Coaches Corner With Kerry Messersmith

Sept. 19, 2007

Blazer fans,

FINALLY A HOME GAME! That¹s right guys, we will play our home opener this Sunday against the UTEP Miners at 1 p.m. in Bartow Arena. We hope to see you all there!

Before we get to play on our home floor, we have a very difficult test at Tulane on Friday. Tulane is a well coached and very talented team that has gained national attention this season as they are receiving votes in the AVCA top-25 poll.

We beat the Green Wave in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament last season, 3-1, after beating them at their place in the regular season, 3-2. Both were incredible matches.

Last week we went 3-1. I was disappointed with a lot of things in our loss at Memphis. Credit Memphis, they played very well, but we cannot perform like that and expect to win in this conference.

Thankfully, we showed a lot of improvement over the weekend in earning three shutout victories against Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Stetson.

As I talked about last week, we are going through a major adjustment period right now with our new setter Lilly Domingos. I have been impressed with Lilly¹s improvement in just five matches at her new position. For us to be successful, our hitters are going to need to step up and make adjustments.

Both Ivana and Fernanda must learn to adjust to our new setter. I think they did a better job last weekend and they will need to continue to improve for us to be successful. Lilly is a very smart player so I think she will continue to get better, which will continue to make us better.

Wish us luck on Friday and we hope to see you all at Bartow Arena for our home opener at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Also, don¹t forget next Sunday, Sept. 30, we will get another shot at Memphis as we host the Tigers at 1 p.m. That match will be televised on CSTV so we would definitely appreciate all the support we can get for that match.

Until next time,

Kerry Messersmith
