BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Volleyball player Kiriana Hirini has been named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week. This is the first time that Hirini has earned the distinction, which recognizes Blazers who succeed in the classroom and on the playing field.
Hirini, a native of Tauranga, New Zealand, was outstanding offensively for the Blazers last week when UAB hosted Samford and participated in the Middle Tennessee Invitational. She boasted a clip of .493 hitting percentage, including two matches over .562, and recorded 42 kills on the week.
She had one of her best matches of the season on Saturday against Virginia Tech. Hirini hit an impressive .583 attack percentage, landing 15 kills and added eight blocks to lead the Blazers. She was selected to the Middle Tennessee Invitational All-Tournament Team for her performance in the three matches.
In the classroom, Hirini has been just as strong as she is on the court. She is majoring in philosophy and sports a 3.14 GPA at UAB and a 3.17 cumulative GPA. Hirini was also selected as a member to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2011. To be recognized, one must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
