BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Senior Becca Howard and junior Sara Rishell were awarded Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. It is the second-straight week that UAB has had a player selected, as Howard was C-USA Setter of the Week last week.
Howard averaged 11.38 assists, 1.46 digs and 0.85 blocks per set as she continues to run the Blazers' offense efficiently. She tallied 148 helpers in the four-match span last week, including a week-high 45 assists against Virginia Tech Saturday. Howard also came up with 10 digs, for her second double-double of the 2013 season, and added a career-high five blocks.
The senior is currently averaging 11.54 assists, 1.92 digs and 0.65 blocks per set, while landing eight service aces. Her 11.54 assists average ranks second in the C-USA. This is Howard's second consecutive and career C-USA Setter of the Week honor.
Rishell collected 24 total blocks (4 solos/20 assisted) for an average of 1.85 blocks per set last week. She also accounted for 2.92 kills and 4.00 points per set, while hitting .325 for the Blazers. Her offensive and defensive production earned her a place on the Middle Tennessee Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The junior had a career-high eight blocks against North Dakota Friday, followed by five against Austin Peay and six vs. Virginia Tech Saturday. Rishell has also provided a spark on offense for the Green and Gold as she notched 38 kills in four matches. This is her first career C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor.
UAB will take on Georgia State in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6:00 p.m. CT in Atlanta, Ga., then will travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Hoosier Classic on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14.
