UAB (3-1) vs. Samford (3-1)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB volleyball team will play host to cross-town foe Samford on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 pm CT in Bartow Arena. UAB (3-1) and Samford (3-1) are both coming off of the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge, where both teams finished with three wins and one loss.
This will be the 28th meeting between the two teams. UAB holds a 25-2 advantage over Samford. The last meeting was on Sept. 19, 2009, when the Bulldogs defeated the Blazers in four sets (22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25).
UAB (3-1) opened the season with the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge. The Blazers finished 3-1 in the tournament, the only loss coming to #6 Minnesota.
The Green and Gold are hitting a clip of .264. They closed out the weekend with their best performance of .370 against Jacksonville State.
Defense has been a strong point for UAB thus far in the 2013 season, holding opponents to a .156 attack percentage. The Blazers collected 40 blocks over the four-match tournament, 18 more than their opponents.
Samford (3-1) is coming off of the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge where it tied with the Blazers for second overall in the tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Presbyterian, Georgia State and Mercer but also fell victim to Minnesota.
The Bulldogs are hitting .292, led by Michaela Reesor who has collected 39 kills so far in 2013. Defensively, they are led by Chelsi Carter who has nabbed 47 digs for an average of 3.92 per set.
Senior setter Becca Howard earned Conference USA Setter of the Week honors for her performance in the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge. It was Howard's first conference honor.
She dished out 152 assists in the four games to lead all players. Her 54 in the final match against Jacksonville State set a new career-high. Howard had a well-rounded weekend as she nabbed 31 digs and landed five aces.
UAB had two players selected to the UAB/Samford All-Tournament Team. Outside hitter Sam Skinner led the Blazers with 53 kills over the weekend. She hit in double-digits in three of the four matches, including 17 against #6 Minnesota.
Becca Howard was also selected for the Blazers after she notched 152 assists for an average of 11.69 per set.
