BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team took to the court to open fall camp on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers practiced for over two hours in preparation for the 2014 season.
"The first practice went really well," senior middle blocker Sara Rishell said. "Our chemistry was actually pretty good with all the newcomers. I am really excited, the practice was great. We had a lot of energy and a lot of people competing so I am excited to get going tomorrow."
"It was good," sophomore outside hitter Gabby Deshotel added. "Even with all of the newcomers it seemed like we had all been working together."
UAB will return three starters from last season's squad that finished 21-14, securing the third consecutive 20-win season under head coach Kerry Messersmith. The Blazers have five seniors who will look to lead the 10 newcomers for the 2014 season.
"We definitely need to step up to the plate," Rishell stated. "There are a lot of new people. The five seniors have talked and we are going to meet with the team. We feel that we can pretty much shape the team how we want with so many new people. I think that will be an advantage for us."
The Blazers were recently picked to finish fifth in the Conference USA Preseason Poll, voted on by the head coaches, and Rishell was selected to the 2014 Preseason All-C-USA Team.
UAB will continue fall camp with the 2014 season quickly approaching. The Blazers open up at home with the annual UAB/Samford Tournament. The tournament begins on Friday, Aug. 29 with Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m. and Michigan State at 7 p.m. CT.
