UAB Hosts Spring Fling Volleyball Tournament

UAB hosts the Spring Fling Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The UAB volleyball team will host the Spring Fling Volleyball tournament this Saturday, March 1. The tournament will include 10 teams and matches will be played in Wallace Gym and the Campus Recreation Center.

"We are excited to see our team compete this weekend,” said head coach Kerry Messersmith. “We have seen good progress in our players this spring and we know they are hungry to play against some good competition. Our focus in spring practice has been on improving our ball control and allowing our young setters to improve both technically and tactically. It will be a fun day of great volleyball and we hope to see some of our loyal UAB fans out cheering us on."

Along with UAB, the other teams will include Alabama, LSU, Alabama State, Jacksonville State, West Alabama, Montevallo, Troy, Samford and West Florida.

The tournament will have three courts playing at the same time, two in Wallace and one at the Campus Recreation Center. Each match will be 55 minutes long and the format will be two sets to 25 and one set to 15 if time allows.

Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the last match will start at 3:15 p.m. CT. All the teams will have a break from 12:30-1:10 p.m. for lunch.



The Blazers will play in four matches during the day. They will begin with a match against LSU on Court 1 in Wallace Gym at 8:30 a.m. CT. The team will then have a round off before taking on West Alabama at 10:30 a.m. at the recreation center.

UAB will return after the break with a match against Troy at 1:15 on Court 2 in Wallace. Then, the team will close out the day with a 2:15 match against Alabama State on the same court.
