RUSTON, La. - UAB's volleyball team held Louisiana Tech to -.010 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep. The Blazers put down nine blocks in the straight-set win Sunday afternoon.
UAB improved to 19-12 (6-6 C-USA) on the season, while Louisiana Tech fell to 7-20 (1-11 C-USA). Junior Sara Rishell put together a solid match as she led the Blazers in kills (10) and blocks (7). Her hitting percentage of .529 was a new career-best and also led the team.
Fellow Junior Kiriana Hirini added eight kills and hit at a clip of .412 in the win over the Techsters. Hirini also landed a career-high three aces. Freshman Amber Treace dished out 29 helpers and added a kill to help push UAB past La Tech.
Louisiana Tech's -.010 attack percentage was tied for it's lowest of the season. The Blazers limited the Techsters to just 22 kills and forced 23 errors on the afternoon.
UAB went on a 12-2 run in the first set to take a 13-5 lead. Louisiana Tech tried to come back with a 6-0 run to close the gap to 24-18, but the Blazers held on to their lead and took the first set win 25-18.
The second set proved to be more difficult for UAB, as Louisiana Tech took an 18-15 lead forcing the Blazers to take a timeout. They quickly got back on track with two-straight points and closed out the set with a 5-0 run to win 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead into the break.
With the third set tied 10-10, the Blazers went on a 10-1 run that was capped off by an ace from Hirini. The teams battled back-and-forth but UAB remained in control of the set and held on to take a 25-19 win and complete the sweep of the Techsters.
The Blazers return home for their final regular-season games when they host Rice on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. CT and then Charlotte on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. CT. Friday's match has been designated as senior night.
