BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team fell to in-state foe Alabama, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) on Tuesday night. It was the final non-conference contest for the Blazers.

"I think we did some nice things offensively," said head coach Kerry Messersmith. "We ran our middles a little bit more than we have in the past few matches and we need to continue to get better doing that. We weren't aggressive with our serve at all and they really took advantage of that."

The match kicked off with an exciting first set that saw 10 ties and five lead changes. Alabama took a slight lead up 16-10, but UAB rattled off four-straight points to pull within two. The Crimson Tide pulled away again with a 21-16 lead to force a UAB timeout.

Out of the timeout, UAB went on a 6-1 run to tie the match up at 22-22. UAB scored a point off of a kill by senior Ally Slaughter, but Alabama was able to string together several points and take the set 25-23.

In the second set, Alabama took an early 5-1 lead. The Blazers fought back to tie it up 7-7, but weren't able to pull ahead and the Crimson Tide won the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The third set proved to be much like the first, as the teams traded points with eight ties. Alabama was able to pull away a with a 21-19 lead, and would hold on to take the set 25-22.

As a team, UAB hit .270 for the match and had three players hit over .300, including sophomore Sam Skinner who led the team with 17 kills on a .406 attack percentage. Junior Sara Rishell added nine kills and fellow junior Kiriana Hirini had six.

Freshman Amber Treace paced the offense, dishing out 34 helpers to the fleet of Blazer hitters. UAB out-blocked the Crimson Tide, with seven blocks to Alabama's two. Rishell led the charge with five block assists and Treace added three. Senior libero Rachel Fairbanks grabbed 15 digs to lead all players in the match.

UAB will be back on the road in Conference USA play this weekend as it travels to UTSA on Friday, Nov. 8 and Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Nov. 10. The matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. CT and 1 p.m. CT, respectively.
