HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team (17-9, 5-4 C-USA) defeated Alabama A&M (5-17, 3-1 SWAC) in straight-sets on Sunday night. The Blazers topped the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-18).
UAB was led by junior Bethanie Thomas, who tallied 11 kills and hit a career-best .733 attack percentage. Junior Kiriana Hirini added eight kills and senior Ally Slaughter landed nine.
Freshman Amber Treace made her first start as setter, dishing out 29 assists on the night. Treace also led the team with a career-high five aces against the Lady Bulldogs. The Blazers were strong from behind the service line, scoring 13 aces overall.
The Blazers continued their momentum this weekend with the straight-set win. After dropping the first set against UTEP, they have won six-consecutive sets. The teams battled back-and-forth in the first set, with the Green and Gold coming out with a 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Blazers cruised to a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Then, they were able to close out the win with a 25-18 score in the third set.
UAB will have a quick turnaround as it hosts Alabama State on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CT in Bartow Arena.
