GREENVILLE, N.C. ---- Sam Skinner and Sam Serley each reached double-digit kills, as the UAB volleyball team won its eighth straight match, sweeping East Carolina, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-13) on Sunday afternoon at Minges Coliseum.
UAB finished the week 3-0 and improved to 15-11 overall and 7-3 in Conference USA action. The win marked the eighth in a row for the Blazers, as they have not lost in the month of October.
The Blazers will look to continue their winning ways, when the SMU Mustangs come to Bartow Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.
UAB controlled the match throughout the afternoon, hitting at an impressive .306 clip. The Blazers’ defense matched their offense, as East Carolina (1-20, 0-10 C-USA) hit only .008 as a club and UAB out-blocked the Pirates, 10 to three.
Four Blazers slammed down six-plus kills in the victory, led by Skinner’s 12. Skinner also totaled six blocks and three digs in the three-set sweep of the Pirates.
Also reaching double figures in kills was Serley, who posted 10 and hit at a .667 (10k-0e-15ta) clip without committing an error. In addition, Serley swatted four blocks.
After taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, the Blazers kept attacking the Pirates, hitting .464 in the final set to cruise to their sixth straight win in C-USA play.
UAB received a double-double from setter Becca Howard, while libero Rachel Fairbanks averaged six digs a set, corralling 18 for the match.
For ECU, Nichole Willis led the team with eight kills and Shelby Beasley recorded a team-high 13 digs.
