BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 11-25) defeat to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday night at Bartow Arena in Conference USA action. The Blazers are back on their home court on Sunday with first serve at 12 p.m. CT against the SMU Mustangs.
UAB (17-3, 7-1 C-USA) received six kills from Sam Serley, while fellow middle blocker Kirsten Gallagher posted a team-high five blocks. The loss for the Blazers snapped a 13 match win streak, dating back to Sept. 3.
"We completely went away from our concept because we panicked and I'm not sure why," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We didn't have anything to lose but everything to gain."
Tulsa (16-5, 7-1 C-USA) received a match-high 20 kills from Tyler Henderson, while Jordan Clampitt tallied a double-double (30 assists, 12 digs).
After dropping the first set, the Blazers battled back in the second stanza, trailing by as much as five, by getting within a point in the later part of the frame, down 18-17. However, the Golden Hurricane would pull away to take the set 25-21 and eventually capture the match in straight sets.
"I think we are very capable of beating any team on any given night," Messersmith said. "We need to come with a different mentality than tonight. Our kids played scared and I think they had a ton of pressure on them, and they didn't. We need to come with the same mentality that we had been playing with before."
