Blazers Sweep Florida Atlantic On The Road

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The UAB volleyball team (14-8, 3-3 C-USA) swept Florida Atlantic (9-11, 1-5 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton. The Blazers won 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-19) in their first ever meeting with the Owls.

UAB used solid defense and a balanced offense to defeat Florida Atlantic on the road. It was the ninth time this season that the team as combined for double-figure blocks. The Blazers recorded 13 total blocks, with junior Kiriana Hirini assisting with seven of those.

A trio of players collected double-figure digs on the afternoon to defend against FAU. Senior Rachel Fairbanks led the way with 17, while sophomore Mariah McCallum grabbed 12 and senior Becca Howard had 10.

Offensively, the Blazers were led by Hirini and junior Sara Rishell, who landed 14 and 13 kills respectively in the win. Hirini, who leads the team in hitting percentage on the season, hit an impressive .560 to help push the Blazers past the Owls.

Junior Bethanie Thomas added nine kills and senior Ally Slaughter and freshman Gabby Deshotel each had six. Dishing out assists to the fleet of Blazer hitters was Howard who served up 44 helpers. She earned her ninth double-double of the season.

The teams played a close first set, with UAB edging FAU 28-26 to take a 1-0 lead early. The Blazers were able to carry their momentum through the second set, taking the win 25-21 to head into the break with a 2-0 lead. They wasted no time jumping into the lead in the third set to close out the match with a 25-19 win.
