EL PASO, Texas ----The UAB volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 14-25) decision to the UTEP Miners at Memorial Gym in Conference USA action on Friday night.
UAB (7-10, 1-2 C-USA) will look to rebound on Sunday at Tulane, with the match slated to start at 1 p.m. CT.
Kate Morrell paced the offense with 10 kills, while Sam Serley hit .417 for the match with eight kills on 12 swings with three miscues. Kiriana Hirini also produced on her swing attempts, hitting .500 (5k-1e-8ta) against the Miners.
The match was extremely close through the first two sets, with the Miners claiming each frame by the identical score of 25-23. In those two sets, a total of 19 ties and nine lead changes took place.
UAB held a lead for most of the first set, but a negative attacking percentage proved to be costly down the stretch. The Blazers committed 10 attacking errors and four service errors, accounting for more than half of UTEP’s points. In the stanza, UAB led 20-15, but the Miners won the race to 25 taking advantage of Blazers’ miscues, going on a 10-3 run to close the opening frame.
In the second set, UAB bounced back to hit .326 after struggling to find consistency in the stanza before. The Blazers led 19-18, but another late surge by UTEP gave the Miners the set and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final frame of the match, UTEP hit an impressive .424 for the frame to claim the three-game sweep.
UTEP (9-7, 3-1 C-USA) hit .291 on the night, featuring three players with double digit kills, led by Jeane Horton’s 15. Xitali Herrera and Cassandra Burruel joined Horton in double-digit kills with 13 and 10, respectively.
