BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ----- The UAB volleyball team (9-3) fell to the host-team Indiana (8-1), 3-0 in the final match of the Hoosier Classic on Saturday night. The Blazers finished in second place for the third-straight tournament.
Sophomore outside hitter Sam Skinner and senior Becca Howard were named to the Hoosier Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend. Skinner finished with 47 kills and recorded two double-doubles in the three matches. Howard served up 100 assists and 34 digs, also scoring a double-double in two matches.
UAB struggled to get in a rhythm offensively against the Hoosiers, hitting just .135 as a team. Skinner led the team with eight kills, but her streak of consecutive double-digit kills came to an end at 10. She added three service aces in the match, with ties her previous career-high.
Junior Bethanie Thomas had a solid night, tallying seven kills and grabbing a team-high 11 digs for the Green and Gold. Senior Becca Howard continued to dish out the assists as she recorded 24 helpers on the evening.
UAB stayed with the Hoosiers in the first set, but an 11-0 run put Indiana up 22-7. The Blazers kept fighting and rallied off four-straight points, but Indiana was too far ahead and took the win 25-13.
The second set required extra points as both teams traded the lead and were all tied up at 24-24. The Blazers just weren't able to come away with the victory as Indiana put together back-to-back kills to win 26-24.
Indiana grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the third set and then went on another run to go ahead 21-10 and put the match out of reach for the Blazers. The Hoosiers were led by Amelia Anderson and Jordan Haverly who tallied 15 and 12 kills, respectively.
The Blazers will remain on the road as they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to face Chattanooga on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. CT.
