BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ----- The UAB volleyball team (8-2) defeated Tennessee State (1-3) in straight sets, 3-0 on Friday afternoon in the Hoosier Classic. The Blazers hit a clip of .221 as a team, while holding the Tigers to just .066 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Sam Skinner tallied 13 kills and 10 digs to lead UAB in the match against the Tigers. It was the third-straight match she has recorded a double-double. Senior Becca Howard grabbed a double-double for the third time this season, with 24 assists and 10 digs.
Also hitting double-digit kills was junior Sara Rishell with 12. Rishell hit a solid .409 and junior Kiriana Hirini hit a team-high .429 in the win. Rishell continued to knock down shots at the net, as she collected eight blocks on the afternoon to stop TSU's attack.
In the first set, UAB was down 14-10 early but an error and two kills by Skinner brought the score to 14-13 and forced a Tennessee State timeout. UAB took its first lead at 17-16, and then the Blazers pulled ahead 22-20 off of a block from Rishell and Skinner. A kill by Howard and block from Howard and Hirini punctuated the 25-21 set win.
The second set remained tight as the teams traded points and with the set tied at 18-18 UAB called a timeout. The Blazers scored four-straight points out of the timeout to take a 22-18 lead. Senior Rachel Fairbanks tallied a service ace give UAB the 25-20 win and go up 2-0 at the break.
UAB put the match away in the third set, going on an 11-0 run to take a 22-10 lead. The Blazers easily closed out the match with a 25-14 win in the final set.
The Blazers will continue play in the Hoosier Classic on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT when they take on Wyoming.
