Sept. 2, 2012
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Sam Skinner recorded her first career double-double and Kirsten Gallagher posted her second consecutive match without committing an attacking error as the UAB volleyball team swept Buffalo, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion.
The victory improved the Blazers to 3-4 on the season and concluded the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame with a 2-1 record.
UAB will host its home opener on Tuesday vs. Georgia State with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena.
UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith was pleased with the way the offense performed all weekend long in South Bend.
"I think our outside hitters all started to click and we had some really good offensive performances from a number of different players in the tournament," Messersmith said. "I also thought our setters did a great job of putting us in a position to be successful and that made a big difference for us."
Skinner, a native of Birmingham, finished Sunday's match with a team-high 12 kills on 24 attacks, and committed only one miscue for a .458 attacking percentage.
Equally, if not more impressive on the offensive side was Gallagher, who put away 11 kills on 21 swings, marking the second straight match with no miscues from the Auburn, Ala., product.
As a team, UAB hit a season-best .303 (43k-13e-109ta), while the Blazer defense held UB (3-3) to a .055 attacking clip.
After hitting .281 in the first set, the UAB offense turned up the heat, registering a blazing .405 hitting clip, making only one error in the frame and would not look back in the three-set sweep.
Sam Serley, again put up strong numbers as well, hitting .467 with nine kills and two block assists to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. For the weekend, Serley averaged 2.80 kills and 1.30 blocks per set and hit .393 over the three matches.
Joining Serley on the all-tourney squad was setter Alison Woods. In Sunday's win, Woods dished out 28 assists in just three sets, while splitting duties running the offense. She reached 20 assists in two of the three matches and averaged 7.2 helpers per set, along with collecting 20 digs over the weekend.
