BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB volleyball team grabbed their second win of the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge after defeating the Presbyterian Blue Hose in three-straight sets on Saturday. The Blazers improve to 2-1 on the season, while Presbyterian fell to 1-2.
The Blazers' defense held Presbyterian to just a .060 hitting percentage. UAB recorded 14 total blocks on with junior Kiriana Hirini collecting eight (2 solo, 6 assists) to lead the team. Junior Sara Rishell (1 solo, 3 assists) and sophomore Sam Skinner (1 solo, three assists) each grabbed four.
On offense, the Green and Gold were Skinner who put down 13 kills against the Blue Hose. Also tallying double-digit kills was Hirini, who totaled 11 on the day. Setter Becca Howard kept the Blazers running a fast-paced offense. She totaled 34 assists, the most so far this season.
Three Blazers scored in double-figures in the match, Hirini (16), Skinner (15.5) and Rishell (10.5). UAB jumped out to a quick lead in the first set and never looked back. They took the win 25-15. In set two, the Blazers fell behind early but fought back to win 25-22.
To finish off the match, UAB took control in the third set as they came out with a 7-1 lead. They went on to win the set 25-14
UAB will be back in action this afternoon for their final match of the UAB/Samford Invitational. The Blazers will take on Jacksonville State at 3 p.m. CT.
