BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s track and field team will open its indoor season on Friday at the Birmingham-Southern College Ice Breaker, hosted by BSC at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

"We are really excited to get our indoor season underway,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “As a team, we have high goals this year, especially for indoor, so we are excited to start the journey.”

Friday’s meet is slated for an 8 a.m. start with the men’s and women’s weight throw set to open the competition. UAB will begin its portion of the competition at 12:30 p.m. in the pole vault event. Field events will continue through 5:30 p.m., and running events will begin at 1 p.m. and continue through 8:30 Friday night.

The Blazers will compete in the world-class Birmingham CrossPlex facility five times over the course of the indoor season, including the Conference USA Indoor Championship, which UAB will host Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

“Our team sits at two sides of the spectrum with the December meet at BSC tomorrow,” said Thomas. “Our sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and multis have been doing nothing but training all fall, so they are really itching to put on that uniform, compete and not just train.”

“On the other side, the distance girls who just finished their cross country season are transitioning and going into track season.  They'll do some speed work events to see where they are and work on track racing situations.”

Friday’s meet will be the lone competition of the calendar year for the Blazers, as they will pick back up in January as they host the UAB Blazer Invitational Jan. 10-11.

“The December meet allows us to see where we are going into the winter break,” said Thomas. “After the break we not only host our home indoor meet the first weekend of the semester, but have to jump directly into competition. Our goal is to not see any drop off from December to January with everyone traveling home for the holidays."

UAB is one of 19 teams competing at Friday's meet, including Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Birmingham-Southern, Bryan, Central Arkansas, Emory, Florida A&M, FIU, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Jackson State, Kennesaw State, Lee, Ole Miss, Mississippi College, Shorter, South Alabama and Tulane. Results from the Birmingham-Southern Ice Breaker will be posted at UABsports.com following the conclusion of the meet.
