HOUSTON, Texas – The No. 44 UAB track and field team is set for competition at the 2014 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which opens Thursday, May 15 and runs through Sunday, May 18 at the Holloway Field & Ley Track in Houston, Texas. Rice University if serving as the host school for this year's championship event.

"The C-USA Championships are the culmination of the entire year for the majority of our team,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “We will have some athletes qualify for the NCAA meets, but for most of the team, this is what we've worked for all year. We look to put a lot of athletes on the medal stand in first, second or third place. This conference is very competitive, so we have to be at our best to do well.”

The meet is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. CT on Thursday with the heptathlon and decathlon taking place. Those two events will be the lone ones on Thursday, with more field events, along with the men’s and women’s 10,000m run, set for Friday. The women’s 10,000-meter run is slated to begin Friday at 8 p.m., an event graduate student Eli Kirk has dominated this year. Kirk currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in the 10k and turned in the No. 8 all-time collegiate run back in April at the Stanford Track and Field Invite, a time that also stood as third-fastest in the world.

Running events begin on Saturday at 5 p.m. and run through 9:20 p.m., while the day’s field events are slated to begin at 3 p.m. The final day of competition on Sunday gets started at 2:30 p.m. with field events, while the final running events will get underway at 4:30 p.m. in Houston.

The Blazers finished seventh in last year’s outdoor championship, totaling a score of 61. UAB is looking to improve on finishes of seventh (2013), seventh (2012) and ninth (2011) in the past three championships at the conference meet this weekend.

UAB has rewritten the record books this outdoor season, setting new marks in the 5,000m and 10,000m runs, as well as a new shuttle hurdle relay mark and pole vault record. Sarah Livett has also put her name in UAB’s freshman record book, now with three different freshman records in the mile run, 5,000m and 10,000m runs.

“We have many extraordinary seniors that we want to see close out their Conference USA careers for UAB on a high note,” Thomas said. “Angel Watson, Shakima Knox, Kyana White, Akira McSwain, Eli Kirk, Neal Tisher and Lindsay Miller are all seniors and very capable to scoring lots of points for the team. We have lots of younger athletes who are getting great experience, but can make an impact. This is the time to do it, at a championship meet, so there's no holding back.”
