BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB track and field team is set for its final regular-season meet, the Samford Invite, on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
The day-long meet is set to start at Noon CT with the field events, while the running events will began at 5 p.m. CT with the women's 4x100m.
"We have one final meet before the conference championship meets get here, and that's this weekend at Samford," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "It works out well in our favor, because we get to stay home, sleep in our own beds, and go out and fine-tune some races and performances and get ready for the big meets."
For the Blazers, juniors Alexis Bates, Angel Watson and Renay Ransaw are set to compete in the 100m dash. Watson will also compete in the 200m dash with Bates, junior Kyana White, seniors Lytrice Thomas and senior Rachel Harley, freshman Breona Humphrey and sophomore Shelby Barker.
"Most of the sprinters will run the 200m for some speed work," Thomas said. "We do have a few looking to improve their primary event, like Angel in the 200m, Alexis (Bates) in the 100m, and Jessica (Shelley) and Autumnn (Burnett) in the hurdles. But these races will be great work and preparation for what's to come the next two weeks.
Kirk, Brown, Leybourne, Jarman and Scott will also run the 3000m.
"Lots of our girls will drop down to race shorter races, like our distance crew mostly running the 1500m," Thomas said. "We had so many improvements and great performances last week at Vanderbilt, and in California with Rhi (Johns) in the 5k, and Sarah (Hudak) in the 1500m and 800m, that we're really looking for some sharpening of some things and execution to be at our best in two weeks at Rice for the conference championship."
The relay team `A' of White, Harley, Watson and Thomas will run the 4x400m, while the `B' team of Barker, Burnett, Humphrey and Bates will run as well.
Barker is also set to compete in the high jump, while Ransaw will compete in the long jump, and sophomore Kendra Gipson is set for the triple jump.
Up next, UAB travels to Houston, Texas, to compete at the Conference USA Outdoor Championship, hosted by Rice, May 9-12.
