BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB distance runner Elinor Kirk picked up another Conference USA honor on Tuesday when she was named the league's Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Kirk, from Swansea, Wales, was named the recipient of the C-USA award after her 10,000-meter performance last Friday at the Stanford Invitational when she clocked a 32:17.05, the third-fastest time in the world this year. That time also ranks her No. 8 among the all-time collegiate performers in the 10k.
The All-American Kirk, who is twice a Conference USA Indoor Championship high point scorer, finished 48 seconds ahead of the second-place collegiate runner in the race last Friday at Palo Alto, Calif. In addition, her time shattered the UAB record for the outdoor 10,000 by more than a minute.
Kirk was the top finisher among collegiate runners in the event.
With her performance, Kirk achieved "A" Standard qualifier status for the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. She ranks No. 2 on the 10k all-time list for Wales and is No. 17 on the all-time list for the UK in the event.
