BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team has broken into the top 50 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s national rankings at No. 45.
“This is great recognition for our ladies who have worked so hard all year,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “It really points to how great Eli (Kirk) is running right now, but it also shows the rest of the team is very competitive. Overall, it helps get our UAB track and field name out there and is great publicity for our athletic department and program.”
The Blazers were No. 107 in the country with a point total of 0.52 in last week’s rankings, but made the jump to No. 45 in this week’s rankings with 15.61 points.
Kirk shattered another UAB record last weekend at the Husky Classic. The Swansea, Wales, native won the 5,000-Meter Run Invite by nine seconds over runner-up and nine-time All-American Kathy Kroeger of Stanford and also shattered the UAB 5,000 indoor record by more than 35 seconds. For her performance in Washington, Kirk was named Conference USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
The ranking for UAB marks the first time the Blazers have been ranked nationally since the 2008 season when they were in 59th.
The Blazers will be back in action to close out the indoor season next weekend, Feb. 28-March 1, at the C-USA Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
