BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second time this season, UAB’s Elinor Kirk has earned Conference USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Kirk turned in one of the most impressive performances in the collegiate ranks this season on Friday as she shattered the Blazer school record to win the 5,000 meters by more than 35 seconds at the Husky Classic with a time of 15:44.38.
Kirk won the race by nine seconds over runner-up and nine-time All-American Kathy Kroeger of Stanford and also shattered the old UAB record of 16:18.92 set by Elizabeth Ambrus in 2008 and Rhiannon Johns in 2013. Her performance on Friday marks the third time this season she has broken a UAB record and stands as the nation’s fifth-best time.
The honor comes just a month after Kirk picked up the league’s first athlete of the week recognition, when she broke the UAB 3,000-meter run record by nine seconds and also broke the Birmingham CrossPlex record by four seconds.
Kirk and the Blazers will be back in action Feb. 28 at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
