BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB track and field team will compete in Samford's Multi and Invitational Feb. 8-9, at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"This is the last meet prior to the C-USA Championships in two weeks," head coach Kurt Thomassaid. "We'll use this in a variety of ways. Of course we want girls to run fast, and jump far, but our distance crew is running some shorter events after that great 5k they ran last week at Notre Dame. It'll really show us some things to be able to decide who to put on the Distance Medley Relay, which we think we can do really well at conference."
Events on Friday will begin at 2 p.m. CT with the first events of the heptathlon, and those multi-events will continue on Saturday at 9:40 a.m. CT. Saturday's running events are scheduled with start at 8 a.m. CT with the men's 5000m, which will be followed by the first women's race of the day at 8: 30 a.m. CT. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the men's weight throw.
The men's and women's 4x400 relay will round out the event, starting at 8:20 p.m. CT.
"On our sprints side, we've had some ladies running very well, and this is one last chance to improve on some things," Thomas said. "And for others, including some jumping events, we really need to put some things together. Training has gone well, but we need to compete up to our potential, so this meet is our last chance to do it before conference."
Last week, the Blazers competed at Notre Dame's Meyo Invite, and distance runner Hannah Coffin set a new freshman record in the 1000m with a time of 3:01.50, beating the previous record by nearly half a second. Senior Lytrice Thomas and junior Kyana Whitealso set personal bests in the 400m, and Lauren Scott shaved 47 seconds off her personal best in the 3000m.
Up next, UAB will host the Conference USA Championship Feb. 23-24 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
