UAB Track Caps Jace LaCoste Invite

The Blazers wrapped up the regular season on Saturday at the Jace LaCoste Invitational in Starkville.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Elinor Kirk picked up a win in the mile run and Neal Tisher broke UAB’s record in pole vault, to lead the No. 39 UAB track and field team to completion at the Jace LaCoste Invitational hosted by Mississippi State on Saturday.

Tisher highlighted the event, breaking the UAB outdoor record in pole vault (which took place Friday night) with a 4.10m (13-5 ¼) performance, besting her old record of 4.07m.

Kirk ran in two races on Saturday, placing fourth in the 800m after a time of 2:10.25. She picked up UAB's only win on the day, dominating the mile run with a time of 4:40.03, to pace all other runners by more than five seconds. Jenna Wesley placed 10th with a run of 2:17.30, while Kara Woods was 12th after a 2:40.42.

Shakima Knox picked up a third-place finish in the 100m after running an 11.72. Angel Watson ran a 12.09 to finish ninth, while Jessica Shelley rounded out the Blazers in the run with a 12.82 to finish 13th.

Two Blazers took part in the 200m, led by Kandiss Briggs who finished eighth with a run of 24.85, while Renay Ransaw came in 14th after a 25.81.

Kyana White was UAB’s only runner in the 400m, coming in fifth after a 54.85-second run. Sarah Livett finished seventh in the mile with a run of 4:57.05, while Lauren Scott was 14th with a 5:14.86 and Allison Wortel 20th at a 5:55.63.

Akira McSwain picked up a top-five finish in the 100m hurdles, running a 14.22. Jessica Shelley ran a 14.45 to finish 10th, while Shelby Barker was 13th after a 14.82 and Ransaw 14th at a 14.92.

Autumnn Burnett placed fifth in the 400m hurdles after running a 1:01.52, while Lindsay Miller ran an 11:46.27 in the 3,000m steeplechase to finish third.

Both of UAB’s relay teams finished fourth, as White, Knox, Watson and Briggs ran a 45.78 in the 4x100, while Burnett, Barker, Watson and White ran a 3:50.50 in the 4x400.

McSwain and Barker both competed in the high jump and finished tied for fifth after leaps of 1.60m (5-3).

Tisher led the four Blazers in the long jump event and finished sixth with a 5.64m (18-6) jump, while Kelli Smith came in seventh after a leap of 5.53m (18-1 ¾). McSwain was eighth at a 5.49m (18-0 ¼), while Ransaw finished ninth after a jump of 5.45m (17-10 ¾).

As a team the Blazers totaled 72 points to finish fourth in the event to close out the regular season. UAB will return to action May 15-18 at the Conference USA Championships in Houston, Texas.
