BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB track and field team won two races in its final regular-season meet, the Samford Open, on Saturday.
"We ran into a little bit of a weather delay that caused us to not run a few events," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "This time of year, we look to peak and be at our best, and sometimes that means being cautious with some athletes and focus on the conference championships in two weeks."
Redshirt senior Rhiannon Johns and junior Elinor Kirk posted a one-two finish in the 1,500m with times of 4:28.05 and 4:29.05, respectively. Sophomore Lauren Scott crossed the finish line at 4:49.67 for eighth place, and sophomore Kristie Leybourne finished at 5:07.55.
"The distance girls who did run got a good race in," Thomas said. "Kyana (White), Rachel (Harley), Lytrice (Thomas) all ran good 400m races and got some good personal bests going into conference."
Junior Kyana White finished second overall in the 400m dash with a time of 55.07, and senior Rachel Harley finished third with a time of 56.09. Senior Lytrice Thomas rounded out the top-five with a 57.05 finish.
Redshirt junior Angel Watson won the 200m dash with a time of 24.17 (0.2), while junior Alexis Bates followed in second with a time of 24.35 (+0-0). White finished 11th overall with a time of 25.25 (+0-0), and Thomas finished at 25.49. Also for UAB, Harley finished with a time of 25.89.
In the 100m dash, Bates finished fourth with a time of 11.88 (-0.5), while Watson finished in seventh at 11.96 (0.3). Also for the Blazers, junior Renay Ransaw
finished at 12.55 (0.1).
In the 100m hurdles, sophomore Jessica Shelley finished in fifth overall with a time of 14.28 (-0.7), while freshman Autumnn Burnett finished in seventh at 14.58 (-0.7). Also for the Blazers, sophomore Shelby Barker finished with a time of 15.45 (-0.2).
Burnett also ran the 400m hurdles, and finished in second with a time of 1:01.73.
"The weather hit, and we had to wait a while before running the 400m hurdles and 200m, but Autumnn ran a great race and finished with a personal best by 1.5 seconds," Thomas said. "She just did great and hopefully takes that confidence to the C-USA meet. All the sprinters ran the 200m and did well. It's great work this time of year to get a solid 200m race in.
In the field events, Barker finished in second in the high jump, topping at 1.62m (5-03.75), and sophomore Kendra Gipson finished third in the triple jump with a best of 11.35m (37-03.00).
Ransaw finished the long jump with a distance of 5.19m (17-00.50).
"Kendra and Renay jumped well in the long jump and triple," Thomas said. "They fouled a few real good jumps, so they'll need to iron out those kinks, but they competed well. All in all, it was a good meet before conference. We have another week to train and prepare."
Up next, the Blazers will travel to Houston, Texas, for the Conference USA Championships, May 9-12.
