GAINESVILLE, Fla. – UAB’s shuttle hurdle relay team set a new school record and the Blazers’ 4x400 relay team set a season best to lead the UAB track and field team to completion at the Florida Relays on Saturday.

“I thought we saw some really good running from our ladies this weekend, but some poor technical execution,” head coach Kurt Thomas. “Our times were not indicative of how we ran and competed. We have to clean up our relay handoffs, execute better hurdling and hopefully that bodes well for some of our open events in the upcoming weeks.”

Autumnn Burnett, Jessica Shelley, Akira McSwain and Neal Tisher combined to run a 56.41 in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay to finish ninth, which breaks UAB’s school record of 56.96 set back in 2005.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Shelby Barker, Kandiss Briggs, Burnett and Fanta Diabate ran a 3:42.78 to finish 26th, a seasonal best.

Barker, Briggs, Breona Humphrey and Jenna Wesley finished 23rd in the 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 4:10.14. Kyana White, Shakima Knox, Angel Watson and Kandiss Briggs all ran in the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay races, finishing 30th and 14th, respectively, with times of 46.09 and 1:37.49.

“I was really proud of Akira, Jessica, Neal and Autumn for their shuttle relay race breaking the school record,” Thomas said. “Our 4x1 and 4x2 sprinted very well, but a bad handoff hurt our times. I was very pleased with our 4x4. That's a great sign for us for this time of year and Autumn, Angel, Shelby and Kyana competed really well. Florida is a great competitive environment, and our girls took advantage of that in the relays.”
