TUSCALOOSA, Ala.--The UAB track and field team wrapped the Alabama Relays with a win in the 4x100m relay on Saturday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.
Due to lightening and heavy rain throughout the day that worsened through the late afternoon, the remainder of the event was cancelled.
"The weather was tough to deal with this weekend, but most of our ladies came out and competed well and got some good performances anyway," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "During this time of year, you never know what will happen with the weather, and sometimes you have to deal with these types of curveballs and still come out and do your job. I think we did that as a whole this weekend."
The team of senior Shakima Knox, redshirt junior Angel Watson, junior Kyana White and junior Alexis Bates won the race with a time of 45.89, a tenth of a second ahead of the Georgia team.
In the 100m hurdles, sophomore Jessica Shelley took second place, crossing the finish line in 13.96, while freshman Autumnn Burnett ran a 14.72.
"It was great to come here and have our sprinters run well, defend our 4x100m and 4x200m relay championships and post some solid season opening times," Thomas said. "I think all of our performances set us up well for the big meets next weekend at Texas and Stanford, and for the rest of our season."
Most of the track and field squad will travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays, March 27-30. The distance runners will compete in Palo Alto, March 29-30 at the Stanford Relays.
