Track And Field Opens Alabama Relays With Two Wins

March 23, 2013

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.--The UAB track and field team battled cold and wet conditions as it won a pair of events to start the Alabama Relays, hosted by Alabama.

"We had a great first day of Alabama Relays," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "UAB has come to the Alabama Relays for years and years, and we always try to run well here, because it really sets up the rest of our outdoor season."

Senior Rachel Harley won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.26, while Autumnn Burnett recorded a 1:04.62 finished, followed by Lytrice Thomas at 1:06.25

"Rachel ran a fantastic race in the 400m hurdles," Thomas continued. "She's raced well through indoor, and is really primed to have a good outdoor hurdle season. We have some important races in the 4x100, 100m hurdles and 800m coming up and our long jumpers get a chance to jump. We just want to keep building on what we did today."

In the 4x200m relay, the team of Knox, Watson, White and Bates won with a time of 1:36.93, while the 1600 sprint medley team of Breona Humphrey, Burnett, Barker and Woods finished with a time of 4:22.01.

"The weather was pretty awful, but all of our ladies persevered and we had some very good performances," Thomas said. "Winning the 4x200m with such a solid time in bad conditions was pretty neat."

In the 100m dash, Angel Watson and Shakima Knox finished in second and third place with times of 12.37 and 12.53, respectively.

Kyana White finished third in the 400m dash with 57.33, while Breona Humphrey followed with a time of 58.95.

In the 5000m, Anna Jarman ran a 17:51.66, while Shelby Barker jumped a 1.60m in the high jump.
