BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Junior Elinor Kirk broke both the school record and the C-USA Championship record in the 3000m with a time of 9:23.36 on Sunday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. With 26 points, earned over two days of competition, Kirk was also named high point scorer for the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Redshirt senior Rhiannon Johns finished second in the 3000m with a time of 9:25.35, also under both meet and school records. Johns previously owned the school record with a time of 9:28.59. Junior Kate Brown finished with a time of 9:43.49 for fifth place.

As a team, UAB finished in third place with 83 points, its best finish since collecting 77 points and finishing third in 2005. UCF won the meet with 132.50 points, while Memphis finished in second with 93 points.

"You can't be happier for all the girls and all their hard work," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "This is our best finish since 2005, and it's a long time coming. Everyone played a part in it. It was a great day and a great meet overall."

Kirk and Johns combined for 48 points, more than half, of UAB's total.

In the mile, Kirk finished in second place with a time of 4:43.73, followed less than two second later by senior Sarah Hudak in third place (4:45.46). Johns finished with a time of 4:47.31. The trio combined for 18 points toward UAB's total, and Kirk's time was under the previous meet record of 4:45.08.

Freshman Hannah Coffin set a personal best in the mile, running a 5:12.36, while Hudak also scored two more points for UAB with a 2:13.14 finish in the 800m finals.

"Eli (Kirk) getting high point is phenomenal," Thomas said. "Her performance, along with Rhi's (Johns) was outstanding. You can't ask for more. For as many races as those girls ran, along with the entire distance crew, you can't ask for any more from anyone in a single meet. As fast as they ran, they were able to come back and do it again in other races. It's a great effort."

In the 400m dash finals, junior Kyana White finished with a season best time of 56.25 for three more team points for the Blazers. Redshirt junior Angel Watson finished the 200m dash with a time of 24.51 for two points toward the UAB's total.

Also for the Blazers, sophomore Shelby Barker set a personal best in the high jump with a height of 1.63m (5-04.25).
