BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB track and field team wrapped up its lone home event of the indoor schedule on Friday, when it hosted the Blazer Invite at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

"I think my staff and I are pleased with the way the meet turned out,” head coach Kurt Thomas said. “We had so many solid performances across the board that, coming off of Christmas break, you have to like where most of our athletes are fitness wise.”

In the first event of the day, junior Elinor Kirk broke the meet record in the mile with a time of 4:50.87. The previous meet record (5:01.06) had been set by teammate Sarah Hudak, who finished the race in second place with a time of 4:59.54. Redshirt senior Rhiannon Johns rounded out the top three with a time of 5:03.48.

“The highlight for us was the mile,” Thomas added. “Eli, Sarah and Rhi going 1-2-3 was awesome. Eli almost beat Sarah's school record from last year so that's a great sign.”

In the 400m, junior Kyana White ran a 59.60 while redshirt junior Angel Watson ran a 7.74 in the 60m qualifiers before running a 7.83 in the finals.

Sophomore Jessica Shelley ran an 8.92 in the qualifier of the 60m hurdles before running an 8.93 in the finals. Freshman Autumnn Burnett also qualified for the finals with a 9.00 before running a 9.13.

“I thought Jessica Shelley had some good races in the 60m hurdles, we welcomed a new teammate, Hannah Coffin, who hasn't run track in a while, and she ran really tough in the mile and 800m and showed signs of being able to help in the future,” Thomas said. “Rachel Harley ran a great 800m. For a sprinter and hurdler, we knew she had some distance abilities and she's really embraced that."

Senior Rachel Harley ran a 2:15.37 in the 800m, while freshman Hannah Coffin made her debut with the track and field team with a time of 2:29.42 to win her heat. Junior Kara Woods ran a 2:40.00 in the final heat of the race.

In the 200m dash, senior Thelyssa Katchen ran a 25.52 for second place in her heat, while fellow senior Lytrice Thomas also finished in second in her heat with a time of 25.93.

Racing for the first time with the Blazers, junior Anna Jarman finished in third place of the 3000m with a time of 10:24.02. Also racing for the first time in Green and Gold, sophomore Lauren Scott finished with a time of 10:58.41.

In the long jump, junior Kelli Smith finished with a best distance of 5.55m (18-02.50) while sophomore Shelby Barker finished with a long of 4.97m (16-03.75).

In the 4x400m relay, the team of Katchen, Harley, White, and Thomas finished in second with a time of 3:51.95.

"The meet as a whole went great,” Thomas said. “We look to put on an event where teams can shake the rust off after the holidays, and ran almost 1000 athletes in one day. The crossplex staff, our officials, timing crew, and volunteers did an amazing job. Brian Mackin came out to support us too. It all makes for a great future for our event and our program."

Up next, the Blazers will travel to South Bend, Ind. on Feb. 1-2 for the Meyo Invite.
