Blazers Rank High In Latest Collegiate Tennis Rankings

PRINCETON, N.J.... Mirela Vladulescu of the UAB women's tennis team is ranked 13th in the latest Collegiate Tennis rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Vladulescu posted a 10-1 singles record during the fall and defeated four ranked opponents. She won the singles championship at the Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Invitational.

Vladulescu, along with doubles partner Monika Schmid, placed 11th in the doubles poll. Vladulescu and Schmid went 8-1 during the fall and won the doubles championship at the Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Invitational and the Vanderbilt Invitational.

Schmid came in at no. 68 in the singles poll. Schmid posted an 8-5 record during the fall.

As a team, the Blazers rank 72nd, up one spot from last year's final ranking of 72. Last season, UAB was 12-8 overall and posted a 5-3 record in Conference USA.

UAB's men's team checked in at no. 36 in the poll. Last season, the Blazers went 19-7 overall, were 4-1 in C-USA play, finished the season ranked 32nd and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships.

Andre van der Merwe of the men's team placed 68th in the singles poll. van der Merwe posted a 9-5 record during the fall and defeated two ranked opponents.

The men's team opens the season at home January 23rd against Birmingham Southern at 2 p.m. and the women open against Denver January 20th at 9 a.m. in Tuscaloosa.
