Vladulescu, Schmid Post Strong Showing At June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn.... UAB's Mirela Vladulescu and Monika Schmid, ranked t-49th in the WingspanBank.com Intercollegiate tennis association national rankings, advanced to the finals of the June Stewart Invitational on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The doubles duo defeated Andrea Piski and Carolina Ramirez of Auburn 8-6 in first round play and knocked off L. Jackson and S. Petorio of Northwestern 8-5 in the semifinals. Schmid and Vladulescu will meet Kate Burson and Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Vladulescu, ranked 68th nationally, advanced to the Flight 1 semifinals, topping no. 51 Katja Kovac of Baylor 6-4, 6-2. Vladulescu will face 16th-ranked Ditty Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Schmid also advanced to the semifinal round in Flight 2 Singles, defeating Leigh Bradwell of Kentucky 6-3, 6-3. She will face Jenny Miller of Vanderbilt Saturday at 11 a.m.

In Flight 3 Singles action, Margaux Melsheimer of UAB fell to Burson 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Melsheimer will take on Frieda Borjessou of Baylor in the first round of consolation play Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Femke deBoer of UAB fell to Aleke Tsoubanos of Vanderbilt 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in Flight 4 Singles action. deBoer will play Paula Stephen of Baylor in the first round of consolation play Saturday at 10 a.m.

Natascha Immele of UAB lost to J. Rush of Northwestern 6-0, 6-1 in first round play of Flight 5 Singles. Immele will take on R. Barnes of Northwestern Saturday at 9 a.m.

In Flight 6 Singles play, Tanja Pflugfelder of UAB topped Alison Bradley of Baylor 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Pflugfelder will match up against S. Kokx of Northwestern Saturday at 9 a.m. Also in Flight 6, Sjouke Liem fell to Stacy Varnell of Middle Tennessee 6-1, 7-5.

In Flight 7 Singles action, Nadia Dellarciprete of UAB defeated Samma Edwards of Auburn 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Also in Flight 7 Kristina Wilson of UAB fell to Niger Kaur 6-1, 6-2.

In Flight 4 doubles play, Liem and Dellarciprete defeated Kokx and R. Barnes of Northwestern 8-6.
