BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rachel Daniell, a sophomore on the women's tennis team, was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance both in the classroom and on the tennis court.
Daniell, who is majoring in biology and maintains a GPA of 3.88, grabbed her first singles title of the 2012-13 season by sweeping through the No. 2 singles flight last weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Steve Baras Fall Classic. Daniell won her first match 6-4, 6-3 before downing her next two opponents, including the final, by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
The sophomore finished the weekend with a 5-1 record, her only loss coming in the first round of doubles. Her four victories in singles tie a team-high, while her two losses in singles tie a team-best as well.
The UAB women's tennis team is back in action this weekend, travelling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Oct. 5-6.
