BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB women's tennis opens the 2013 fall season this weekend when the Blazers travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Steve Baras Fall Classic, which is set for Friday through Sunday.
The Blazers begin their second season under the direction of head coach Lisa Jackson. Last year, UAB finished with a 12-8 record -- its best mark since going 14-2 in 2007.
Jackson and her team welcome back five letterwinners from a year ago, including junior Rachel Daniell, who finished the 2012-13 season with a team-high 21-12 overall singles record. Daniell capped off her sophomore season by placing on the Conference USA All-Academic Team, becoming just the second Blazer women's tennis player all-time to be given that honor.
Joining Daniell will be returners Caroline Faught, Amy Lowther, Elaine Simon and Sarah Witkowski. Meanwhile, UAB welcomes four newcomers in freshmen Giovanna Baccarini, Paula Castro, Pardis Kianoush and Catherine Ragon. The four newcomers comprised the 2013 class, which was ranked No. 12 among mid-majors in the www.Tennisrecruiting.net recruiting rankings.
"We have been working hard leading into the fall season," Jackson said. "We brought in a great class and have a lot of returning talent, so I am excited to see how we compete this weekend."
The 31st Steve Baras Fall Classic will feature Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, Murray State and Lee University.
Competition begins at 7 a.m. CT each day and runs Friday through Sunday. For updates and all the latest news on UAB women's tennis, log on to www.UABSports.com, visit the team's official Facebook page (UAB Women's Tennis) or follow the Blazers on Twitter (@UABAthletics).
