The top-seeded UAB women's tennis team will take on Memphis in the second round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships, Friday at 9 a.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Memphis defeated Saint Louis 4-0 in Thursday's first round.
The Blazers earned the first round bye and top seed in the tournament by compiling the best record in school history at 19-2. UAB opened the season with 16 straight wins before falling to #48 ranked Mississippi State. UAB was a perfect 6-0 in league play.
Senior Mirela Vladulescu is ranked number 25 nationally with a 19-1 spring record, all at the number one position Including fall play she is 29-2 for the 2000-01 season.
Junior Monika Schmid is 20-1 in the spring, going 18-1 at the number two spot, 1-0 at number one, and 1-0 at number three.
Schmid and Vladulescu have teamed up for a 15-3 record at the number one doubles. They were ranked as high as number 11 after the fall season and are currently ranked 42nd. The number two doubles team of freshmen Femke deBoer and Margauz Melsheimer also went 15-3 at number two.
Tulane is the second seed in the tournament. South Florida is third and Marquette fourth. The Blazers did not face any of those three teams this season.
