BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Seniors Rachel Cohen, Menanteau Moolman and Isabel Fernandez play at George Ward Park for the final time on Sunday as the UAB women’s tennis team closes out its home slate this weekend.
UAB battles Alabama State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. CT, before going against Conference USA foe UTEP on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. Before Sunday’s contest, the Blazers will pay tribute to the 2013 senior class.
“I could not have asked for a better group of seniors to spend my first year with at UAB,” head coach Lisa Jackson said. “They have given this program everything they have during their time here and I am positive they will be successful in the future. I look forward to sharing a special day with them on Sunday.”
The Blazers enter the final home weekend with a 10-6 overall record under Jackson. This year’s win total is already the most for UAB since 2010 and tops last season’s mark of six wins.
Part of the Blazers’ success in 2013 has been the play of Fernandez, who boasts a 12-4 singles record and a 10-3 doubles mark with teammate Elaine Simon.
Sophomore Rachel Daniell has also been a key contributor for the Blazers. The Douglasville, Ga., native holds a 12-5 singles record, playing mostly at the No. 2 court.
As a team, UAB has won two-straight and holds a 1-1 mark in C-USA action. Against UTEP, the Blazers look to win their second league match for the first time in three seasons.
Alabama State, UAB’s Friday opponent, comes into the contest with a 4-14 overall record and has lost three-straight matches on the year. On Sunday, the Blazers face a UTEP team that is 10-10 overall and 1-1 in C-USA action.
Following play this weekend, UAB travels to South Alabama on April 13 for an 11 a.m. CT match, before ending the regular season at West Florida on April 14 at 11 a.m. CT.
